These sapphires were collected near Helena, Montana at the El Dorado Bar. A screening process is used to separate the sapphires from the alluvial gravel, sapphires being much heavier than the host rocks. Commercially, many sapphires, including those found in Montana, are heat treated to obtain a deeper blue color. Sapphire is a very hard material and per carat, can be worth more than an equal sized diamond.
